Levi Peloquin leads his Oberlin Tigers on the ground and in the air; named offensive MVP

OBERLIN- Accounting for 10 total touchdowns in the 2018 regular season was the starting quarterback for the Oberlin High School Tigers Levi Peloquin.
He threw three of his touchdowns to two separate receivers. He also ran in six touchdowns himself and was on the receiving end of another touchdown from Seth Rider from six-yards out. For his efforts on the year, Peloquin was selected as the first ever  Allen Parish Football Offensive Most Valuable Player.
“It’s an honor,” said Peloquin. “I have to give thanks to the offensive line, to the coaches, and to a good receiver in Jared Joubert. He’s been one of  my main targets. When I throw the ball to him, he’s going to come down with it. He makes my job look easy.”
Peloquin’s goal for the start of the season was much like that of his head coach Durell Peloquin Jr. “My goal for the year was to win a district championship,” he said. “Our district has been tough over the last three years. In my freshman year, we ended up winning the district.”
The Tiger season with Peloquin behind center began with the team going 6-0 before losing back-to-back district games against St. Edmund’s and Basile.
After South Cameron forfeited the Week 9 game, Oberlin finished the regular season with a commanding win at Elton and began the playoffs with a similar performance in the first round against Northwood-Lena.
The 60-0 win in the first round set up a home tilt with Jonesboro-Hodge with a stout defensive unit.
“Their defense was real,” said Peloquin about facing Jonesboro-Hodge. “We fought hard. Everybody did their job, and we came out one point ahead at 23-22.”
In that second round game, Peloquin completed six of his eight pass attempts for 100 yards with an interception. He also rushed for 101 yards on 10 carries.
The win then set up a quarterfinal appearance on the road at Oak Grove in what was not the most ideal field conditions.
“The snaps were the hardest part about it,” said Peloquin about his team’s 14-8 loss to end the season. “We had two ball boys circling, and they would get a new ball in after every play. It didn’t hurt our throwing, but we slipped and fumbled the ball while running it. It was hard, but both teams had to play in it. So, it was fair.”
On top of his 10 total touchdowns on the regular season, Peloquin completed 29 of his 51 pass attempts for 616 yards and rushed for another 401 yards on 40 carries. He also threw only three interceptions and committed one fumble. For good measure, he also punted twice for 36 yards.
“I’m not the fastest of quarterbacks,” Peloquin said about his abilities. “I can throw the ball pretty good, and I run north and south to try to go through defenses instead of running around them.”
Peloquin will be returning to the Tiger squad next season and will look to accomplish similar goals from the season before.
He concluded, “Next year, I want to go further in the playoffs to the semi-finals and maybe even to the state championship. But, my goal for sure is to win district.”

Howard, Dronet lead their teams on post-season strides including a title run

In their short time so far at their respective schools, both Dustin Howard and Mark Dronet have put their basketball programs back on their winning ways. Howard’s Oakdale Warriors took home the parish tournament championship for the first time in 11 years, and Dronet’s Reeves Lady Raiders made it the tournament formally known as the Top 28 for the first time in 46 years. For their efforts, both coaches were named as Allen Parish Coaches of the Year. “It’s definitely an honor anytime you get recognized,” Howard said, “but Coach of the Year is a team award. You can’t be Coach of the Year unless your team performs.” Equally humbled by the honor was Dronet. “I couldn’t even tell you how many basketball games I’ve won during my coaching career,” he said. “That’s not why I coach. I don’t coach for any award or anything like that. I just coach for the satisfaction I get knowing I’m having an impact on the girls who I coach.” Dronet continued, “I guess it’s nice to be recognized as Coach

Lady Hornets win third consecutive Class C state softball championship

SULPHUR- A range of emotions was felt by the Plainview Lady Hornets after achieving dynasty status following their third consecutive Class C softball state championship. “It’s a little bittersweet because that was my last game playing with these girls,” said starting pitcher and state tournament most valuable player Madison Pippen. “We played six years together. We’ve all grown really close, and we’re like family. It’s a great feeling.” Echoing Pippen’s sentiments was senior Allie Willis. “The first emotion I felt after we won was excitement,” she said, “but we were all sad because we’ll never get to play together again. We were all upset about that because it’s just so fun playing with your best friends all the time. We don’t want it to end, but there’s no better way to go out than the way we did.” Orchestrating this dynasty at Plainview was head softball coach Elliott West. “When we got beat four years ago in the finals,” he explained, “I was ve

Oakdale, Fairview reign supreme in parish tournament

OAKDALE- For the first time in over a decade, the Oakdale Warriors are Allen Parish basketball champions after they took down Fairview 85-66 Saturday in the finals of the RoyO.Martin Parish Tournament. “In 2007, they went 10-0, were district champions, and were kings of the parish,” said head Oakdale coach Dustin Howard. “I actually had several guys from that team text me to tell me good luck and that it was time for the parish championship to come back to Oakdale. I’m proud to say that it has.” Howard added, “Our guys wanted this and wanted it bad. I think people could see that by the way we played on the court.” Fairview Panther head coach Ron Stark said about the game, “Oakdale is good. It’s hard to beat them here. They shoot the ball well. They shot better than I thought they could shoot.” He went on to say his team is young this year, but his team got some much needed power points by beating the Elizabeth Bulldogs Friday in the semi-final game of the parish tournament.
